Fuelled by People: Meet Sean McGenity

In our Fuelled by People series, we're shining a spotlight on the team members who help drive the business forward every day. From their careers and experiences to what they enjoy outside of work, it's a chance to get to know the people behind Morgan Fuels.

This time, we're catching up with Sean McGenity, Finance Manager, whose journey with the company began on the forecourt and has developed into a key leadership role within the finance team.

Sean has been part of the Morgan Fuels story for almost a decade, first joining the business as a teenager working part-time as a pump attendant while studying.

As his education progressed, so did his career. During his degree at Queen's University Belfast, Sean completed his placement year with Morgan Fuels, moving from the forecourt into head office and gaining valuable experience within the finance department.

Following graduation, he joined the business full-time as a Finance Assistant, while completing his accounting qualifications. Over the years, he has continued to develop his skills and responsibilities, eventually progressing to his current role as Finance Manager.

Reflecting on that journey, Sean says the experience has given him a unique perspective on the business.

"Moving from the forecourt to Finance Assistant, and eventually stepping up to Finance Manager, has given me a real appreciation of how the business operates end to end."

No two days are the same in Sean's role.

As Finance Manager, he oversees cash flow management and daily accounting operations while working closely with colleagues across the business and with Morgan Fuels' virtual teams. Reporting, reconciliations, process improvements and strategic planning all play a part in his day-to-day responsibilities.

What he enjoys most is the pace and complexity of the industry itself.

"The commercial scale and fast pace of the fuel industry make every day interesting. There's a direct link between wider economic changes and the decisions we make as a business, so the strategic side of finance is always engaging."

Of course, it's not just the work that keeps him motivated.

"Working alongside a great team every day makes a huge difference."

For Sean, one of the standout aspects of working at Morgan Fuels is the opportunity to grow.

"If you're willing to put in the work and take ownership, you're given the trust and support to develop. There's real progression here for people who want to challenge themselves."

That supportive culture is something he sees throughout the business.

"The team is hard-working and collaborative. Everyone looks out for each other, and there's always a good dynamic across the office."

When asked about a moment that captures what life at Morgan Fuels is all about, Sean immediately thinks of one experience.

"Reconciling the accounts for the same forecourt I used to work on as a pump attendant was a real full-circle moment for me."

It's a story that perfectly reflects both his own career progression and the opportunities available within the business.

Away from the office, Sean enjoys staying active and spending time outdoors. He plays GAA for Dromintee, follows sport closely, enjoys travelling whenever he gets the chance, and can often be found walking his dogs at the weekend.

And for anyone looking for him on a Saturday morning?

"I'll probably be out for a walk with the dogs and stopping somewhere for a good coffee."

After nearly 10 years with Morgan Fuels, Sean's experience demonstrates how a career can grow alongside the business.

From working on the forecourt as a student to leading the finance function, his journey is a testament to the opportunities available for those willing to learn, develop and take on new challenges.
